Innovation has always been at the heart of our history. It all started in Wormer with the brothers Albert and Jacob Adriaan Laan. On July 1, 1893, they founded the first steam-powered pearl barley mill in the Netherlands. This factory was later expanded with an impressive silo. Once again, the brothers opted for innovation, choosing the relatively new building material ‘reinforced concrete’ for its construction. This silo is still in use today. In 1954, the Royal Steam Rice Mill Mercurius introduced rice to the Dutch market under the brand name Lassie.
The drive for innovation has never faded and has also shaped our rice assortment. It all started with Toverrijst. By pre-steaming the rice, it cooks faster, making life much easier for many Dutch households. We continued this trend with the introduction of our rice pouches and Lassie Minuutje, we were the first in the Netherlands to bring quinoa to the table, and now offer a rich and growing range of delicious rice and grains. Today, with Lassie, Tilda, and Riso Scotti in its portfolio, Ebro Foods Netherlands has grown to become the leading rice and cereal company in the Netherlands.
